View Full Version : Song of the South
Want to see the movie? Have an hour and a half to spend online watching it? The quality is not the best (not like watching a DVD) but for those who want to and have never seen this wonderful movie, here you go:

So, I have been hearing (since like 04) that they were going to re-release it this fall? Anyone else hear that or no? I'm probably gonna go home and watch it tonight, poor Jake will be stuck watching it as well!
Yep Danette, I heard the rumor. That is why I don't usually post rumors. It was wrong. Disney has NO plans to release this movie in the US.
I am going to watch it when Alex takes a nap. If he ever takes one again. lol
Seeing Uncle Remus sing Zip a Dee.... will be amazing. I have not seen that since I was a wee child myself, but sure remember the bluebird sitting on his shoulder as he sang.

I heard this rumor too, and that Robert Iger said when he took office that he had some things he wanted to accomplish (one of them was getting Oswald the Lucky Rabbit back, and among others releasing Song of the South). The rumor was that it would be released for the 60th anniversary (it was made in 1946, so the 60th is this year). Anticipating this release, Universal released an "Adventure of Brer Rabbit" DVD earlier this year. However, I have since heard that Iger personally reviewed the tape and said that they would not be releasing the movie. So I really don't know how it stands..

Interesting! Hi Kevin - are you in the U.S. or travelling already?

I had to delay my trip to Wuhan, China due to some customer jobs here in the states (I originally had a ticket for October 2nd, now I'm leaving November 1st). My colleague is in China already, and I will be there from November 1st - December 14th.
Anyways, I keep hoping for the Song of the South Movie to be released too. I have seen it, and while I can see be somewhat offensive, I still feel it's such a nice family film. Besides, how are you going to explain Splash Mountain to the next generation of Disney fans?
BTW: Last year Saturday Night Live did a parody of the Disney Vault where they mentioned Song of the South. Did anyone ever see it?

I vaguely remember the SNL skit, they always crack me up.
Glad you're still here, hope you fit in a trip to Disney sometime soon!
I kind of remember the skit as well, but know I didn't see it. Think I got it online.
As for Song of the South, I saw this at the drive in when I was a child. I saw it in Colorado. That was AFTER my time in South Carolina. I had many African American friends when I saw this movie.
I may have been too young to take offense, but even knowing the subject matter, I feel this movie SHOULD be released. It is not only one of the best Disney movies made, it is American History.

I don't remember it enough to say whether it was offensive or not. BUT considering some of the crap that's out there, how can it possibly be more offensive. As always, we all have to choose what we want to watch and walk out on the rest and request a refund!
Now, these people who were going to protest at the Amish girl's funerals - I do not care to see or hear these people on the t.v. or radio and wish they would go elsewhere - anywhere, just not on our planet. Though I applaude Mike Gallagher for giving them an hour of airtime in exchange for staying away from the funerals. Those people just make me sick. They should go to Disneyland and learn! I think we all have a lot of blessings and deserve nothing but good and happiness.
I think I remember parts so vividly because it was the first movie I saw that combined animation with real live.
The bluebird on the shoulder is a picture that will be forever implanted in my mind.
I didn't see Mary Poppins until Andy and I married. It was his favorite movie, and I saw it for the first time with him.
If they released this movie, I think Disney would be shocked by the response. In a good way, not a bad way.

Yes they would. I think all people understand that all Disney movies have been put together with love - throughout the years. Let's face it, the Princess stuff doesn't exactly portray women like we'd like to be portrayed - and who wants to be the "nasty witch", so to speak. We still love them!

I think one of the other reasons out there is there are many people who haven't seen the movie who have opinions of it being bad. You are right Shawna, if you don't like the movie take it back (although some stores might not let you), or sell it on ebay. I've seen plenty of movies which I might find offensive, but Song of the South certainly isn't one of them (I can tell you that I own the Japanese release of the movie on VHS). I would still purchase the DVD version of this if it were ever released. I'm sure it will have a good following, as it was listed in Amazon as the #5 most requested movie on DVD.

Interesting Kevin! Okay Disney marketing is going to have to take notice of that sooner or later and the movie will probably eventually come out (maybe they'll wait until after the Year of a Million Dreams and use that to scare up some publicity and traffic.)

So, a friend of mine "aquired" a vcd copy of the movie and I finally got to watch it.....I don't think I ever actually watched the movie, I think I just read the stories when I was little. Johnnie's mom is mean!!! And it was her own fault he got hurt!! I didn't see anything wrong with the movie....they didn't portray the slaves any differently than any other movie set in that time frame and Disney was one of the first companies to actually use black actors so I don't know why the NAACP complained about it? Oh well, maybe they'll have a change of heart here soon.

Probably because THEY never watched it before either Danette! They love to jump on a bandwagon and start negative publicity over something that isn't even a problem.
