View Full Version : Toddlers and Eating
So for those of you with kids. Is it normal for a young child to forgo food while on vacation? If you read my trip reports, you know Alex ate 2 meals in 6 days. One early in the trip, and the other the day we came home.
Of course, now he is sick, and I am definitely blaming his lack of eating.
How do you get a toddler to eat. I would not have cared if all he ate was chicken nuggets, but he would not even eat those. The biggest shock is that he would not even eat dessert.
Anything chocolate he calls cake. Well, we had plenty of 'cake' while on vacation, often getting dessert in hopes it would entice him to eat. No dice.
So please clue me in. Our next trip, he will be an almost 4 year old and I don't want him to starve himself then either.

First time poster. This is a great forum. Thank you for all the great tips.
Got a 5 and 2 year old and going to Disneyland tomorrow. We are fortunate enough to live close by(a 20 minutes drive) so we are opting for a SoCal annual pass. My wife and I call it Duloc (taken from Shrek) when we don't want the kids to know we're talking about Disneyland.
I'm sorry to hear about your son's lack of appetite, but maybe he was already sick after the first day and just lost his appetite during the trip. I know when my daughter is sick, often times she won't have much of an appetite. I personally hate to travel, especially on a plane, only because there is such a greater chance of catching a cold or something while in an enclosed space for several hours. Don't get me wrong, I love to visit exciting new places. I just wish we can be beamed there like in Star Trek! I'd say 7 out of 10 times when my family travels by plane, we ultimate get sick during the trip. One thing I've heard may work is to rub some Neosporin under your nostrils which may lessen you're chances of catching something (and your kids too). Of course washing your hands often and not rubbing your eyes are best. Drinking lots of water too helps because the high altitude dehydrates the body.
Dumbo,
I've got peanuts, and welcome to the boards! Wow, 20 minutes from Disneyland. I would go broke. I am a shopahollic. lol
I can't wait to hear about your trip. It will be interesting to see how busy Disneyland is now, after the big celebration on Sunday. I hope you can let us know.
Neosporin sounds like a good trick, I will try that next time we fly!

Hey Tink!!!!!
I haven't really travelled too far with my daughter, who wil be 2 in mid August, but i do know that whenever we go anywhere (and i mean ANYWHERE) i always have a bag of stuff with me. I realize that being on vacation is different, but maybe just packing a bag of goodies for wherever you go may help. When i say goodies i mean, things like grapes, goldfish crackers, cereal, raisins, fruit to go bars (if you have those-they are all natural fruit leathers), or a good granola mix is always good. I always go to the bulk food store and buy a bunch of everything, like raisins (golden and reg), dried cranberries, sunflower seeds (out of the shell), yougurt covered raisins, dried pineapple and apple pieces, all that good stuff. That usually goes over really well because they can pick and choose what they want to eat out of it. <img src='images/emotions/biggrin.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Big Grin' align='absmiddle'>
And if you find he still isnt eating, just make sure he is drinking plenty. Dehydration on vacation would not be a fun thing! Hope all works out well for you on your next trip!!!!! Good luck! Well, we went to Cal-Adventures on a Thursday night to redeem our SoCal annual passes. It was butt-hot:blush: and crazy-crowded:crazy:. It was still 80 degrees at 11:30pm. This was one week before the whole rollercoaster accident occurred. We were able to catch a few rides at A Bug's Life and Ariel's Merry-Go-Round. We also saw the Electric Lights Parade. Boy did that bring back memories from when I was a kid.
I also did the ESPN Zone freebie. Food was good and the kiddies enjoyed the games. My favorite is the mini-bowling game where you knock down these pins with a miniature bowling ball(the size of large grapefruit). The free cooler was pretty nice also.
Dumbo, even with the heat, it sounds like you had a great trip. If you feel up to it, I would love to read a full report of your trip! You could put that in trip reports and it will get a lot of attention.
If you don't feel up to it, don't worry, I won't force ya to do it :P
