When we got our Little Mermaid video on DVD, and watched it again - it's been years obviously - Ariel says she's 16 at one point. So, why is she getting married at 16??? Why does her family not stop this completely???

I had the Little Mermaid donkeys years ago on video, i dont remember her saying shes 16 but... i wouldnt remember so... i agree! its wrong! maybe there is no law under the sea and they can all do as they like? but... if it had just been re-relaesed they could of just cut that bit out?

I just don't remember any time during the past 50 years when parents thought their 16 year olds should get married...

Shawna, apparently it's okay in the cartoon world. Sleeping Beauty was only 16 too, remember? But I can't really say too much about that--I was only a couple years older when I got married! If my daughters wanted to get married that young- I'd freak out, but, of course, I thought I was ready and it's been working for me so far. LOL (We've been together for 9 years, married 7)
What I think is funny about Ariel is that she is the youngest of all the sisiters, and yet she is the first to fall in love and get married. If I was the oldest sister, I don't know how I'd feel about that! LOL Maybe there is a shortage of decent, bachelor mermen in the sea!

I was trying to remember Aurora - I couldn't remember which birthday is was when she pricked her finger, I had thought it was 18! I just wish they'd change the ages before they re-release them...
I was pretty young getting married as well (although I'll never tell Morgan what age I actually was until she's MUCH older), but we've been married 15 years (together 17) and it's been fine. Honestly though, I'm a totally different person than when we were married...

Not sure about Aurora, the other post said 16. I'll have to watch that one.
I didn't remember it either until I HEARD it on Little Mermaid.

Well, Rose learned some new "patty-cake" song on the playground at school that goes something like "Rose is having a baby...her boyfriends going crazy". YIKES!!! I asked her why it didn't say "husband". She said " that's just the way it goes, Mommy". I think I'll lock her up til she's 30!!!!:w00t:

Ugh!!!!!! Oh man I don't want Morgan to grow up! I do but I don't...I do but I don't! Any group of moms out there want to homeschool as a group and never expose the kids to anyone outside of our houses???

Aurora is 16 when she pricks her finger. Sleeping Beauty is Corinne's favorite princess. We watch the movie, read the book, and Corinne has a Sleeping Beauty castle that she plays with. She always has me play Malificient and I have to say "touch the spindle, touch it I say!" Corinne then has Aurora fall asleep and wait for Phillip to come and kiss her. We act out the whole movie with her little playset. (It has Sleeping Beauty as a baby, as Briar Rose, and as Princess Aurora. It even came with Malificient and the dragon Malificient. It's a very neat set!)
Sometimes Corinne likes to act out the movie in her Aurora costume. I still have to be Malificient and Scott gets to be Prince Phillip! How fair is that? Whenever we play Little Mermaid, guess who gets to be Urcela? Why does Mommy always have to play the bad guy? Is it just me?...LOL

I want to be the witch!!!!! Now you are gonna have to PM me a link to buy that castle - I want it!!!!! How cool is that?!!!

I had noticed before on the early movies that the girls were young too, and didn't think much of it since girls got married much younger back in the 'old' days. lol
While not sure why Disney continutes to make the girls young even in the newer movies, it doesn't bother me too much - but then again - I have a boy, so that could be part of it.

That's probably a big part of it for me. It's hard enough with a teenage girl, but the princesses have to get married on the NEW videos at 16??? Come on, no one does that anymore - okay, just a few, but they're usually in the back woods states.

Tink
12-07-2006, 02:21 PM
lol Shawna - not just the back woods I am sure ;)
But yes, I am sure that is one reason it bothers you. And no worries, we all have the right to feel badly about Disney movies.
Do you know how old Jasmine was? I can't remember, and it is one of my favorite movies. lol

I believe Jasmine was 18. It doesn't say how old Cinderella was.
On another age note, we don't know how old Belle was either, but the Beast had until his 21st birthday before the change was permanent. When you couple that with the fact that Lumiere says they've been like that for 10 years, it means that the Beast was only 10 or 11 when he got the curse. He was still a boy! That's an awfully harsh lesson for that young of a child--don't ya think?
Just goes to show ya you can't take the facts of these shows too seriously! They are for entertainment!

Oh yeah, these are the funny things that bother me - just for fun! Gosh, if it bothered me that much I wouldn't watch or waste my time! Just funnies and mommy frustrations!

Yep, and for me that is the joy of Disney Movies. They have wonderful things to laugh at and simply enjoy and then later stuff to ponder (like this topic).

The movies that The Little Mermaid and other Disney fairy tales are set in are during a time where it was okay to get married at a young age. Remember that most of these disney movies use to be fairy tales from a long time ago,in countries where marrying young was the norm. I mean, Beauty and the Beast was orginally from the late 1700's and The Little Mermaid was from the 1800's. I'm guess they want to stay true to some of the story at the very least.
Also, a large part of their target audience are young girls. They relate better to young characters even when their off doing grown-up things. It;s kinda hard to relate to a 30 year old woman who wants to get married when your 8 years old.

Disney5

Aubrey - I WAS a teenager when the Little Mermaid came out and it WAS NOT okay to get married at 16 in the 80's - that was a no way!!!! Maybe other countries, but not the ones like those of us who have computers live in. I mean, it happens, but it's not acceptable or looked upon as admirable.

Tink
12-13-2006, 03:34 PM
Shawna - lol she said 1800's not 80's ;) But yeah, it was not alright to get married that young then. Heck in the 80's I wasn't even allowed to date until I was 15! And THAT was a family friend. lol

I was born in the 80's :D

LoL. I meant that the movies were set during a time when marrying young was okay. Sleeping Beauty was set around the times of Kings and Queens, Aladdin seems to be set around 17th century middle east....

Disney5

Gotcha Aubrey! lol...still another funny one - set back in time but they have modern conveniences...lol....
And I know, you're younger than most of the kids I babysat!

I don't even remember an age being said. I'll have to listen for that. I don't think any 16 year old is gonna use Ariel as an argument anyway if they feel they want to marry at 16. If I were a parent of a 16 year old girl that said "BUT MOM, ARIEL MARRIED AT !", WHY CAN'T I?" I think after I stop laughing really really hard, I'd say honey, you answered your own question. LOL!

Boy Aubrey - thanks for making me feel old ;) I graduated from high school in the early eighties, and married in the later eighties. lol

Lol Sharon! You totally crack me up!!! So true... I think I'm MORE horrified now that I have a daughter - you KNOW it's my job to shield her from anything I THINK is even close to inappropriate and don't want her even THINKING about! lol...and she's 2.

Juliet in Romeo and Juliet was only 14......

Sorry, just had to put that out there! LOL

Shawna you're funny! You can always tell Morgan (if she argues that Ariel got married at 16) that 16 mermaid years is equal to 40 human years!! LOL :P

Disney5
12-26-2006, 07:46 PM
OMG, I can't believe I forgot about Juliet! Actually there are still countries all over where girls marry that young (and sometimes younger - sickeningly!!!!) Of course their age expectancy isn't what it is in the US either...
Thanks for the idea Danette, you know I may be asking for this kind of creative advice in years to come. I have NO problem lying to her about this stuff...lol...

Okay, I haven't read all the replies to this thread, so if someone already brought this up, sorry! Most of those movies (Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, etc...) took place during eras from long ago. And during those times - medieval times and such, girls were married off very young. I mean back in the day, girls were considered "old maids" if they were single at 20 years!

Disney5
12-31-2006, 08:18 AM
Yeah Lisa, we're mainly joking at stuff, but I still wish Disney would up the age! lol...

Ariel is 16--when Triton is yelling at her for going to the surface again, she says"Daddy, I'm 16 years old-I'm not a child!"

Oh, I hate it when kids and teenagers are like 'I'm practically an adult!'!!!! (I'm 16 myself and don't consider myself 'grownup' or some such dorkiness!) Sleeping Beauty was 16, remember the witch/fairy lady said before the sun set on her 16th birthday, she would prick her finger and die.
Have any of you heard of the Babysitters Club (a series of books)? You'll get a kick out of this one, one of the babysitters is 11 years old (why anyone would let an 11 year old babysit their children I have no idea), anyway, she says in the course of one of the books, she says, "I am far too old and responsible to need a babysitter." LOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just find that amazing!

Tink
01-09-2007, 02:15 PM
Em-
Babysitters club - oh my that is definitely something I remember as those books were out when I was younger.
And keep in mind, when those were written, the world was a different place. I was a babysitter at age 11, but that was 30 years ago, when it was popular then.
Just thought I would remind you of the time period. lol

Oh man, it's nice to hear a 16 year old saying this!!!! Thanks!!! You restored my faith!
I never read Babysitter's Club, I thought it came out later. Yes, I too babysat at 11 and up. I would be HORRIFIED to have an 11 year old babysit Morgan! I think NOT! The funny thing is that I remember parents chasing me around and knocking on our front door without even knowing me or my parents (but knowing I lived in the neighborhood) to ask if I did babysitting and could I come this weekend? Their kids didn't even know me! So weird...

Although I guess I should add that at 16, I did think I was "grown up" and had a serious boyfriend, etc... Different times.
